Extract from Cpt Wilfrid Miles Book

On the 4th July 1916 thunderstorms had lasted all afternoon; the troops were soaked, the trenches were filled with water, and the ground became inches deep in clinging mud which balled on the feet of both horse and man.   The Royal Flying Corps could not render much assistance, although some targets were registered and a useful reconnaissance of 'Mametz Wood was made.   No German machines crossed the British lines.

The three days, 4th to 6th July 1916 were spent by the British and the left division of the French XX. Corps in making their preparations and endeavouring to improve their positions in readiness for the advance against Hardecourt, Trônes Wood, Mametz Wood and Contalmaison, which was fixed for the 7th July.  Destructive and harassing fire was maintained by the artillery, many batteries being pushed forward.  In the repair and improvement of roads, a vital need, the engineers, including tunnellers, had the assistance of pioneers and infantry; but supplies of road metal, and the rail and road transport to bring them up were strictly limited.  The problem of ensuring an adequate water supply for the large numbers in the forward area was already difficult and threatened to become more so on the uplands between the Somme and the Ancre.
